How to beat the Cybersecurity culture blocks

Blocks are unavoidable, but not immovable.

Regardless of our organisations’ industry, size or type, or whether we operate in a single market or globally, we all come up against blocks barring our way to a successful cybersecurity culture. These blocks are largely known to us. We talk about them all the time and share our woes, both within and across organisations.
But when it comes to our techniques for removing them, we share less.

We develop bespoke solutions that are as many in number as there are CISOs in the world, and we keep these solutions largely to ourselves.

When The Security Company (TSC) was offered the opportunity to speak with members of its partner the Security Awareness Special Interest Group (SASIG), we determined to share the practical and proven approaches we see our clients deploy as they drive their cybersecurity culture along the maturity curve.
We took a three-pronged approach.

Firstly, we surveyed over 2,000 industry professionals on what blocks they experience. This revealed the common blocks that you and your peers face — the top four of which are covered in this report.
Secondly, we put a small group of CISOs in a room — virtually, of course — to focus on these common blocks. We encouraged them to not only share their experiences of these blocks, but also to develop practical approaches to remove them.

Finally, we ran our ‘How to Beat the Cybersecurity Block’ online workshop with SASIG members. We brought our CISO group in to facilitate a number of break-out sessions. In these, SASIG members discussed how they address the common blocks. Crucially, attendees were encouraged to take away one or more ideas, top tips, or best practices to apply after the workshop closed. This was the workshop’s raison d'être — that it provided genuine, actionable value to participants.

This report attempts to curate the discussions, data and views that came out over the course of putting together the event, as well as the output from the workshop itself. We believe that the top tips and advice contained within are of use.

In minimising cyber risk and maximising resilience to cyber threats, your organisation’s cybersecurity culture is critical.

And whatever the firmographics and demographics of a business, there will always be blocks barring your way to the creation of the required cybersecurity culture.

This report is an easy-to-follow guide to the four most common blocks to cybersecurity culture success and a compilation of the practical, proven steps you can take to overcome them.

  • Block One – Getting your message across
  • Block Two – Engaging stakeholders entrenched in team silos
  • Block Three – Getting the board to take the lead
  • Block Four – Demonstrating your business impact
